Pop culture has long since moved beyond books, screens, and stages to take over kitchens as well: At this year’s FANTASY BASEL – The Swiss Comic Con, the Yummy Scrummy Stage will serve as a gathering place for nerds and food lovers alike. From anime-themed cakes to vegetarian recipes, matcha creations, and Michelin-starred cuisine, the event showcases just how closely cuisine and pop culture are intertwined today.
The diverse program combines culinary trends with creative show formats and high-profile guests. From French pâtisserie and Japanese tea culture to sustainable cuisine and galactic baking shows, the stage offers a multisensory experience for all ages.
Food Trends Featuring a Star-Studded Lineup
A special highlight is the appearance of Pascal Steffen, head chef and owner of the restaurant roots in Basel. The chef, who has been awarded two Michelin stars, 18 Gault-Millau points, and the title “Green Chef of the Year 2026,” will present his modern, vegetable-centric cuisine and demonstrate how sustainability and haute cuisine go hand in hand.
Esther Kern, one of the most influential voices in plant-based cuisine and founder of a new culinary movement, will also be in attendance. In the show “Leaf to Root & Taste Not Waste,” named after her best-selling books, she will join chef Dennis Mertens to demonstrate how creative dishes can be created from leftovers.
The Swiss media scene is also well-represented: Pablo Vögtli from SRF BOUNCE brings urban lifestyle and culinary art to the stage with “Trap Kitchen Live.”
From Globi to Galaxis: Entertainment for all ages
Friday is Family Day: Iconic character Globi teams up with cookbook author and recipe developer Dorrit Türck to create an interactive experience. With kid-friendly vegetarian recipes, the show invites everyone to join in, taste, and enjoy.
The 501st Legion Swiss Garrison will provide extraordinary entertainment on Saturday with the first Imperial cooking show: Under the motto “Galactic Wookie Cookies,” stormtroopers will swap their armor for cooking utensils and let the audience enjoy flavors from the Star Wars universe.
In addition, the audience is invited to get actively involved: at the Fantasy Recipe Wall next to the stage, visitors can share their favorite recipes with the community while discovering new dishes, snacks, and menus.
International cuisine and creative fusions
The Yummy Scrummy Stage showcases the latest food trends from around the world. Sushi Yoko, a Japanese chef and graduate of the Tokyo Sushi Academy, introduces guests to matcha and mochi, while Sara Hochuli from Café and Teahouse Miyuko combines French pâtisserie with Japanese tea culture. Another highlight is the dumpling show featuring food creator Jessica Manurung - known to over 20,000 followers on Instagram through her platform “basel_eats”- and the Basel restaurant Peng Dumplings, who will jointly present the art of folding Asian dumplings.
Taste as an experience
The Yummy Scrummy Stage embodies a modern food culture centered on sustainability, creativity, and cultural diversity. Of course, the fun factor is a must. The stage invites visitors to share new recipes and enjoy cooking together.
And if your stomach starts to growl while watching, you can enjoy delicacies from around the world at the various street food stands at the festival.
Friday is family day
The festival is hosting a Family Day on Friday, May 15, featuring a varied program for the whole family. Teenagers up to age 16 accompanied by an adult receive a discounted admission price, and children up to age 9 get free admission every day.
